Lightening, darkening and isolating individual elements of a shot for both beauty and narrative purposes makes “Director of Photography (::[ ]::)“ a welcome tool for not only the day to day business of Final Cut Pro color correction, but to the craft of narrative storytelling as well. In my “Jack-of-trades” editorial days on the syndicated versions of HBO’s, Sex and the City, I discovered much of the actual lighting of show’s daily footage was shot quite frankly - flat. The show’s original colorists did great work with a DaVinci to create the show’s final lighting in a controlled post production environment, but I didn’t have a DaVinci... To recreate their results, a great deal of effort to produce non-existent lighting and/or flagging along with isolated color correction sections in a Final Cut Pro timeline became a day to day chore. It was out of this experience that “Director of Photography (::[ ]::)” was born. Based on the original lighting, a viewer’s attention is unintentionally drawn to the light areas of this frame. before “Director of Photography (::[ ]::)” AFTER “Directing” the viewer’s attention back to the subject’s face as originally intended. Note a subtle defocus of the background scenery as well.
